Portfolio > Artist Residency in Advanced Mokuhanga in Echizen, Japan

Select artworks and reference photos from a 5-week artist's residency in advanced mokuhanga at the MI-LAB studios in Echizen, Japan, from June 15 to July 19, 2025. I learned numerous advanced techniques in water-based woodcut carving and printing; advanced tool maintenance; introductory paper-making in Echizen's washi village; and detailed traditional Japanese scroll-making and book-binding. I created many experimental prints; carried out ecology-based research; experienced beautiful Japanese culture and natural history in the region; and made lasting friendships. This transformative experience will influence my creative practice for years to come.
