Portfolio > Artist Residency at Martha Street Studio, Winnipeg

Example artworks and photographs from a 2.5-week residency at Martha Street Studio, Winnipeg, from March 19 to April 4, 2026. My site-specific research took me on walks through the city's historic Exchange District National Historic Site – named after the Winnipeg Grain and Produce Exchange, founded in 1887 - as well as natural areas in and around the city, such as Assiniboine Forest, La Barriere Park, and Bird's Hill Provincial Park.

My studio time, in the 1919 R.S.R Building at 11 Martha Street, included a public demonstration of mokuhanga (water-based woodcut printmaking), experiments with transfering sumi ink drawings to woodblock and printing in sumi ink, soft-ground etching, and intial trials combining these media. I brought back over 1000 reference photographs, dozens of ecological sound recordings, and daily writing, to continue exploring this work in my home studio.
