Lisa Matthias

Residing just outside of Edmonton in Parkland County, Alberta, I am an interdisciplinary visual artist working primarily in printmaking, sound, and time-based media. I hold a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of Alberta, a Master of Science in Plant Ecology from the University of Manitoba, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Guelph. Originally from Kitchener, Ontario, I have lived and worked in Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Alberta, experiences that continue to shape my interest in place-based practice and regional ecologies.

My work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and internationally, and is represented by two commercial galleries in Calgary and Edmonton. I have presented solo exhibitions in Edmonton (2013, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023), Calgary (2014, 2015, 2019, 2020, 2022), Toronto (2021), Winnipeg (2024), Vernon (2023), and Vancouver (2025).

Before transitioning fully into a career in the visual arts, I spent over a decade working as a botanist and wildlife biologist in the landscapes of western Canada. This field-based scientific training continues to inform my studio practice, which is rooted in close observation, documentation, and sustained engagement with ecological systems. My work often emerges from time spent in gardens, forests, and institutional collections such as herbaria, integrating scientific ways of knowing with material exploration and visual language.

Printmaking is central to my practice, particularly woodcut, etching, and monotype, alongside experimental approaches that incorporate sound recording, ecological soundscape composition, and stop-motion animation. Across media, I am interested in how attention, labour, and translation shape our understanding of the living world, and how creative practice can foster deeper engagement with living systems amid ongoing environmental change.

Alongside my studio work, I teach community art classes, participate in artist residencies, and volunteer with arts organizations. I balance my professional practice with family life and regular time spent outdoors, where observation, listening, and making continue to overlap.
